How does Officer Newton help Alfa and his family in the novel, Walking to the Bus-Rider Blues?

Officer Newton listens to and considers all of Alfa's evidence, after which, he finds no evidence for the Merryfield's involvement in the theft at Mrs. William's home. He also gives Alfa sufficient money to pay rent and tells him that his family will be exonerated of theft and Mama Merryfield will receive Social Security payments that should cover future rent expenses.
