The heart is symbolic in two ways, as the soul and as a physical organ. Lin and Manna regularly converse about knowing and following their hearts. Heart disease is used to discourage Manna's unwanted suitor. Later, she actually develops a heart disorder, which is a symbolic representation of the damage caused by an affair of the heart that went unfulfilled for too long.
