Mary Ovington was a well known white reformer, who believed that disadvantaged people needed even more education than the average student. Her desire to help improve the lives of working black women was sincere, but she had trouble getting her studies published because her honest reports angered conservative magazine owners. Ovington would later play an important role in the start of the NAACP.
