Why is Lin locked in the basement of the laboratory in the novel, Vox?

Lin Kwan is a neurolinguist and a medical doctor. She is also a homosexual, a sexual orientation that the leaders of the Pure Movement consider a crime. When Lin is caught having relations with her lover, she and the woman are put in the equivalent of jail in the basement of the laboratory.
