Room 1 plays a parallel role to Room 101 in the dystopian novel 1984 by George Orwell. In that novel, Room 101 was where a person was exposed to his worst nightmare. It was located in the basement of a building, as is Room 1 in this novel. Morgan sends Jean to Room 1 when she refuses to work on a serum to cause fluent aphasia in order to show her that he has Jackie, Lin, and Isabel in custody. He warns Jean that if she does not cooperate with him, one of her friends will die.
