How does the author use symbolism in the novel, Vox?

One example of symbolism can be seen in the keys that Patrick carries, which represent his burdens. Jean indicates that these keys opened the things that Jean was not allowed to access because of the rules of the Pure Movement. She believed that he looked weighed down when he carried these keys.
