Cameras are signs of control, and they are everywhere. Jean, however, indicates that there are no cameras inside her house, so her life is not as bad as that of Winston Smith, a character in and an allusion to the novel 1984, which is also a dystopian novel. Regardless, there is a camera on her front porch as well as many public areas.
