Because the narrator is infatuated with Vladimir, she instantly feels jealous of and competitive with Cynthia. However, after Cynthia appears at her office explaining her absence at the barbecue, the narrator's opinion of her changes. Cynthia is not only an admirable writer, she is beautiful, graceful, and forthright.
