How do Jimmy's feeling about his wife change over the course of the novel, Visitation of Spirits?

Jimmy's late wife Anne previously represented his ideals of love, loyalty, faith in God and marriage. When he discovers her infidelity, James feels as though Anne's symbolic significance has been destroyed.
