Why is Katherine killed in the novel, Virals?

The central issue surrounding Katherine's death is the disposition of Cole Island. After Katherine discovers eagles living in the trees on Cole Island, she is killed so that she cannot reveal the truth. Cole Island is about to be sold, and the new owners intend to cut down the trees and build a Pharmaceutical company.
