What is the importance of birds in the novel, Victory City?

Repeated images of birds throughout the novel are symbolic of escape and liberation. Indeed, Pampa and her companions often transform into birds so that they can flee dangerous situations. Birds are also messengers throughout the novel, and thus grant the characters free access to information.
