What was Vernon's punishment?

Vernon was sentenced to death, proved innocent, pardoned, and in the end.... waiting to vacation in Mexico. Thus, his time in jail would be considered punishment for something he didn't do. The only thing Vernon did wrong was choose the wrong person to be his best friend.
