Colonel-General Hoth led the Fourth Panzer army. His troops were active outside of the Stalingrad pocket and assisted in relief attempts. Hoth succeeded in patching up the front after the Russians broke through in the Stalingrad area. His troops prevented the enemy from seizing Rostov and isolating Army Group A.
