Julia is the personification of the struggles of motherhood and one’s desire to figure out who they are outside of their caregiving. While married to Marshall, Julia was forced to give up her identity to adhere to what he wanted from her. This eventually led to her feeling that she was nothing more than a mother to Emma and not her own person, even causing her to feel guilty for having her own desires. By the end, Julia realizes that she does not have to give up herself to be a good mother. In fact, making herself happy guarantees that Emma will have a good life too.
