Lucky's brooch represents her connection to her ancestry. At first, Lucky thinks the brooch belonged to Arnya originally, and thus thinks of her mother whenever she looks at it. Just as the other witches use the brooch as a map to guide them, so too does Lucky use her mother's wisdom to guide her in her journey. At the end of the novel, when Lucky learns the brooch is actually Stella's, it comes to symbolize all of the ancestral wisdom Lucky has from both her mother and grandmother.
