How does Elvis describe himself in the novel, Velvet Was the Night?

Elvis, is a 21-year-old member of the Hawks, a paramilitary group dedicated to quashing communism and leftist activism in Mexico City. Elvis, however, dislikes violence; he jokingly describes himself as “a thug who wanted to hold his punches” (4).
