Why does Jennifer take her own life in the novel, Valley of the Dolls?

Jennifer plans to start a family immediately after her marriage to Senator Adams, but she is diagnosed with breast cancer. When Winston tells her he does not care if she has children because her breasts are the only babies he really wants, Jennifer kills herself rather than undergo a mastectomy.
