Why does Ward keep his military medal hidden away in the novel, Valiant Gentlemen?

When Cricket asks why her father does not display his award, Ward tells her that he believes the medal will upset Sarita. Sarita is angry about the war having taken the life of her son, Charlie, and blames Ward and men like him for making it necessary for a mother to have to sacrifice her sons.
