Throughout the novel, images of the desert, represent isolation and loneliness. The dryness and barrenness of the land mirrors and enacts the female protagonists' feelings of abandonment, of frequent powerlessness. Indeed, the land often seems to reject human survival. Their ability to find hope and strength amidst it, shows their determination to survive even in the most depleted of circumstances.
