What does the forest stream that Logan visits represent in the novel, Upgrade?

The stream that Logan visits during his solitude near the forest represents the divide between his old life and the new. On one hand, he has memories of the time he spent with his family. He recalls the wonder and happiness that he felt. In the present, however, he is unable to enjoy the scene beyond the physical aspects and patterns he cannot stop seeing.
