What does Logan give up in order to save the world in the novel, Upgrade?

All throughout the novel, Logan wishes he could return home to Beth and Ava writing them numerous letters that he is never able to send. However, when faced with the possibility of hurting them by returning, Logan realizes that he must find the strength to give up his family to keep them safe.
