Miriam exemplifies the concept of hubris and the incorrect belief that those with more intelligence are the only ones who can make decisions. Miriam is established early on to have a much higher IQ than the average human. While this does translate into legitimate thoughts and credible achievements, it also means that she thinks that her decisions are the only ones that matter. Since Miriam believes she is the only one who can make the right choices, she does things without considering all of the alternatives, leading to things like the Great Starvation and the deaths caused by the mutating upgrade.
