Levi “Lev” Calder is thirteen and is celebrating his impending unwinding. He is a tithe – a child marked for unwinding since birth. Tithes are considered an elite group. They are special children whose purpose in life is to serve God. Lev, like all tithes, has been taught all his life that it is an honor to be tithed and he looks forward to it. However, when he comes into contact with Connor and Risa, his point of view begins to change drastically. Ultimately, he comes to the determination that he has a right to live and that the God he wants to worship does not believe in human tithing.
