As the character of Jack matures and learns more about his past, his point of view changes. Having blamed his father for leaving his mother and him, he learns that it was his mother who kept his father away and that his father was more involved in his life than he ever knew. As these revelations are made, Jack's point of view becomes reflective as he reconciles his memories as a child with what he later understands actually happened.
