What is one example of the connection between the past and the present used by the author of the nonfiction book, Unstoppable Us?

Fear of spiders, fears of monsters in the night, and obsession with fire are all things that Harari argues show a connection between Sapiens’ past and three present. Harari uses the fear of spiders to explain how fears must be learned. He uses the fear of monsters in the night to explain that children thousands of years ago were kept alive as a result of this fear. Harari also argues that humans’ love of watching fire is also a leftover obsession from our ancestors.

Harari argues that it takes time to learn to fear things, that is why Sapiens are afraid of spiders but they are not afraid of cars. Harari reasons that cars kill more people than spiders do, yet people are generally more afraid of spiders than they are of cars. He concludes that “humans had time to learn to be afraid of spiders, but they haven’t had time to become afraid of cars” (155).
