Weatherford’s purpose is to give her reader the facts about the way Blacks were treated during this period in time (segragation), and to describe how they did well for themselves in spite of this treatment. The author also provides background to explain the cause the massacre, and she details the ways the Blacks were mistreated and abused. Ultimately, she allows the reader to draw their own conclusions about what happened based on the facts that she shares.
