Iano is Willa's husband, a college professor. Iano's role within the novel is often as a calming foil to Willa's preoccupation with the house and worries for their children. In the past, Iano was unfaithful to Willa, a fear which resurfaces as their relationship shows cracks under the intense stress of taking care of their grandchild.

Iano is also more free-spirited than Willa, and more able to understand Tig and her eccentric nature that Willa often clashes with.
