Kingsolver uses the "home" as a symbol of the physical foundation of a family in the novel. When the family worries that they will not be able to renovate their historical home, the fabric of the family also begins to crumble. However, by the end of the novel, the trials and tribulations the family experienced creates a stronger foundation untethered to any physical home.
