Why did Ice empathize with Marie Claire and Bob in the novel, Unhooking the Moon?

Although Ice initially showed no interest in the children, he felt great empathy for the youngsters because he had been a homeless kid himself. In the end, he came to the rescue when the Rat was in real trouble.
