The author's tone is confessional in the sense that she is revealing very personal information that is, quite often, a source of great shame, without being maudlin or melodramatic. Despite the fact that Westboro is known for its inflammatory rhetoric and over-the-top stylistic flourishes (of which Phelps-Roper was an enthusiastic participant), it is clear from her narrative and her tone that she is actually a cautious and reasonable intellectual who is guided in all things by her moral code.
