The author, Megan Phelps-Roper, was a member of the vitriolic, ultra-conservative Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas from birth until she chose to leave at age 25. In Unfollow, she traces her ideological journey from firm believer in this church's doctrines, which had been deeply ingrained in her beginning when she was just five years old, to skeptic and free thinker after determining that Westboro was wrong. The perspective Phelps-Roper offers is remarkable and invaluable, as Westboro is an insular community and there are only a few people that have left it to pursue life on their own.
