On a narrative level, the book’s perspective is that of the author, Dan-el Padilla Peralta, who recounts the events of his life in first-person, past-tense narration. That narration is primarily incident-based, focusing on particular events in his life and the order in which they happened. There are a few places in which the narrative includes introspection and commentary, but for the most part the book’s emphasis is on descriptions of what happened, when, and the author’s understanding of how and why, both being defined more often by explanation of circumstances rather than consideration of emotional, spiritual, or psychological elements.
