During the First World War, Firmin captained a ship that famously captured a German submarine. When they reached port, however, none of the submarines officers are found on board the submarine. The crew eventually confessed to killing the German officers and putting them in the ship's stove. This atrocity resulted in a court-martial for Firmin.
