How does the author use foreshadowing in Under the Volcano?

In Chapter Eight, the Consul takes a trip with family and friends to Parian. While there, the consul alludes to the Biblical story of Joshua, in which the sun stood still to aid in a military victory. At this moment, the consul wishes for nothing more than that the sun might stand still, allowing him more time for this rare and peaceful moment with the people he loves, forshadowing the fateful to come.
