How does the author use symbolism in the novel, Under the Skin?

One example of symbolism can be found in Isserley's Toyota Corolla, which is her work vehicle. The car symbolizes pain for her because even after her surgery it is difficult for her to sit up straight and drive, but it also symbolizes her livelihood and ticket out of the New Estates.
