What long-lasting effects does Aether have on the Earth in the novel, Under the Never Sky?

Aether is the swirling in the sky that intensifies with winter, causing fire and water to come together in the sky. The storms start earlier each year, and last longer, bringing fire storms to earth. For sixty years the Aether scorches the Earth, causing mutations as new diseases thrived.
