Who is Joseph Jared from Under the Jolly Roger: Being an Account of the Further Nautical Adventures of Jacky Faber and what is their importance?

Joseph Jared is a member of the crew of the Wolverine. He is almost insolent toward Jacky, but she notes his presence and is obviously enamored of him. When Jacky breaks into a room on a smuggler's ship to investigate the smell of smoke, a spy points a gun at her and is about to fire, but Jared kills the man.
