HQ is a workplace filled with amenities including a bar, an on-site masseuse, ping pong tables and more. The amenities at HQ purport an idea of a healthy work/life balance and care for employee's mental and physical health, but readers may question how this surplus of amenities is designed to keep employees working, rather than taking personal time. Despite the many office amenities, most employees choose to work from home, demonstrating the reality that so much of the tech ecosystem and culture exist remotely and digitally in the cloud. When Anna first arrives, the waiting room at HQ is decorated as a replica of the Oval Office, symbolizing the extreme power that tech industries and Silicon Valley have over society and the economy. Later in the book, this room is redecorated, symbolizing the fact that the open-source startup is rebranding its image in the wake of is sexism scandal as leadership at the company changes.
