Anna notes that all new employees at the open-source startup are given a step-count wristband as an onboarding gift. She wears hers for a week before realizing that this level of tracking pushes her to the brink of an eating disorder. The wristband is symbolic of the tech ecosystem "fetish for optimization culture and productivity hacking" (165). She sees the wristband as a form of biohacking in which tech culture tries to optimize the human body the way it optimizes machines and systems. This is symbolic of how the organic, natural, and material world is being co-opted by the values of tech culture.
