How does the author use symbolism in the novel, Uncaged?

One example of symbolism can be seen in West's prosthetic leg, which symbolizes a second chance for him later comes to symbolize the evil of Singular. It ties him to Singular and makes him, and others like him, grateful for the help. As a result they become dedicated workers for Singular, and do not question orders.
