Sibling bonds symbolize family relationships and the tragic disruption of the family structure in the novel. Tyrell struggles to live up to what he believes to be expectations his mother and father hold for him. His close relationship with his brother, Troy, provides some solace and meaning for him. Tyrell is able to learn how to be strong for his brother in the absence of responsible parents. Although Tyrell is not always in the right with how he tries to discipline or teach his brother, his actions always stem from good intentions.
