For Tyrell, playing with Troy symbolizes catharsis. Playing and laughing with his younger brother offers Tyrell a place where he can be completely understood. Tyrell is burdened with adult responsibilities throughout the entirety of the novel and often more worries about his brother than himself. When Tyrell plays with Troy, he is given the opportunity to feel like a child again rather than assuming the adult role in the family.
