Tyrell’s mother’s hair serves as an example of parallelism with motherhood and the passage of time. She is only able to get her hair done when Dante is willing to pay for it and she is otherwise unable to provide these essentials for herself. In other sections of the novel, motherhood is lamented by Tyrell’s mom as a sacrifice and a drain on her time, resources, and youth. She has seen herself age and is able to turn back the time slightly when she sees herself with her hair done and feels beautiful again.
