Jasmine’s guidance counselor, Yolanda, represents trust and encouragement for Jasmine and Tyrell. When they see an adult figure in a position of power at the school, they should believe this is somebody that they can count on to look out for them. Yolanda helps to instill a sense of self-esteem in Jasmine that relates to her academics rather than her appearance, a valuable process for a young girl. She also helps to convince Tyrell that he should finish high school and that he is smart enough to continue his education.
