In meeting teenager who struggles wit their home life and finds themselves trying to take care of their sibling as well, he feels more connected to himself. Tyrell initially tries to form a romantic relationship with Jasmine, he does grow to see her as a friend and somebody that he can be vulnerable and honest with in ways he cannot be with his male friends or girlfriend, Novisha. For example, Jasmine sees Tyrell’s fear and shame about not finishing high school while he tries to hide this from Novisha so she does not have another reason to leave him behind when she goes to college.
