Tyell's mother has hurt and deceived her children, and he gives up on understanding of his mother’s circumstances and the difficulties she has faced in her life and family. He resents her lack of growth and willingness to take care of him and his brother, so he refuses to hope for more from her. In the end, Tyrell doesn't forgive his mother, but rather, he forgives himself for the way he feels about his mother and stands firm in his decision to try and make a life for himself and Troy without her involvement.
