Nukuheva is described as a nearly round island of about twenty miles diameter that has mountains in the interior and several bays around the island. The best harbor is called Nukuheva, or Nukuheva Bay, and is where the narrator's ship, the USS Dolly stops. The interior of the island is mountainous and uninhabited, with the native population concentrated in several valleys by the sea.
