The lobeless ears symbolize being ‘other’ as well as having special abilities. Many of the Duniazat characters feel like outsiders in some way, and their ears manifest and highlight that. There are some expressions of mistrust in the media, and people connected with lightning (which are also the Duniazat) are proclaimed as ‘persons of interest.’ However, the Duniazat end up uncovering their supernatural powers too, which are also a part of their uniqueness.
