The Alert is author Richard Henry Dana's home for the return voyage from Upper California to Boston, MA, Alert is a well-known "Indiaman" (large merchant vessel) owned by the same Bryant, Sturgis & Co. of Boston, MA. She is bound for Boston as Pilgrim sails and is expected in Upper California to collect some 40,000 hides.
