The newspaper page is the first object on which Belisa Crepusculario discovers that words can be written. This represents the fact that everything has been against Belisa Crepusculario for her entire life. It has been established that Belisa Crepusculario’s survival has been dependent on her ability to sell words. So, when Belisa Crepusculario realizes that those words can easily be recorded by written language, she concludes that her usefulness might have come to an end. Thus, the newspaper page encapsulates the fact that everything has been against Belisa Crepusculario her entire life.
